How to create an invoice in India

A practical checklist for India: required fields, GST wording, INR amounts, numbering and payment terms.

Businesses in India issue invoices that follow a recognisable format. This guide lists what a document should include, the tax terminology customers expect, and the conventions that help an invoice get approved and paid quickly.

What a India invoice usually includes

  • Supplier name, address and GSTIN
  • Invoice number and date
  • HSN or SAC code for items
  • CGST / SGST or IGST breakup
  • Place of supply
  • Total and amount in words

Field by field

This generator preconfigures India conventions: the INR currency, the GST label, DD/MM/YYYY dates and A4 paper size. You enter your details and line items; it calculates subtotal, discounts, tax and the grand total, then renders a print-ready PDF entirely in your browser.

  • Postal code: PIN code
  • Tax rates: GST — GSTIN
  • Currency: INR (₹)
  • Invoice date: DD/MM/YYYY
  • Paper size: A4

Invoice numbering

Default numbering pattern: INV-2026-0042. Invoice numbers must be sequential and unique per financial year; a professional often prefixes the FY.

Tax terminology: GST

Invoices are labelled with the terminology India businesses expect. Presets are provided as a starting point and are not tax advice.

  • GST 0%: 0%
  • GST 5%: 5%
  • GST 12%: 12%
  • GST 18%: 18%
  • GST 28%: 28%

GST splits into CGST + SGST for in-state supply and IGST for inter-state supply — choose the split you need.

Payment practice

Common payment terms used in India: Advance, Due on receipt, 7 days, 15 days, 30 days. Always state a due date, and ask customers to quote the invoice number as the payment reference.

Invoicing notes for India

Tax invoice, not a simple invoice

A GST-registered supplier issues a tax invoice showing GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes and the tax breakup.

Intra-state vs inter-state

Same-state supply uses CGST + SGST; inter-state supply uses IGST. The place of supply decides which applies.

Reverse charge and TDS

Some B2B payments attract TDS or reverse charge — buyers may request your PAN and GSTIN before paying.
